What is a11y?

Web accessibility means designing and developing websites and applications that work for everyone, including people with disabilities. This includes individuals who are blind, deaf, deaf-blind, hard of hearing, color-blind, have low vision, or experience motor, cognitive, or neurological disabilities.

“a11y” represents the word “accessibility.” It’s commonly used in web development and tech communities as shorthand for discussing digital accessibility.

Why Accessibility Matters?

Beyond the moral imperative to include everyone, accessibility provides substantial benefits:

  • Legal compliance: Many jurisdictions require websites to meet accessibility standards (ADA, AODA, EN 301 549, etc.)
  • Broader audience: An accessible site is usable by more people, expanding your potential user base
  • Better SEO: Many accessibility practices align with search engine optimization
  • Improved usability: Accessible design benefits everyone; captions help in loud environments, good contrast aids readability in bright light
  • Brand reputation: Companies prioritizing accessibility are viewed more favorably by users and stakeholders

WCAG Guidelines

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are the international standard for web accessibility. The current version is WCAG 2.1, with WCAG 3.0 in development.

POUR Principles

WCAG is built on four foundational principles:

  • Perceivable: Users must be able to perceive the content. This includes providing text alternatives for images, captions for videos, and sufficient color contrast.
  • Operable: Users must be able to interact with and navigate the interface. This includes keyboard navigation, avoiding content that causes seizures, and allowing enough time for interactions.
  • Understandable: Users must understand the content and how to use the interface. This means clear language, consistent navigation, and meaningful error messages.
  • Robust: Content must work across different devices, browsers, and assistive technologies. This includes proper HTML semantics and ARIA usage.

Conformance Levels

WCAG has three levels of conformance:

  • Level A: Basic accessibility. Minimum standard.
  • Level AA: Enhanced accessibility. The recommended level for most organizations.
  • Level AAA: Highest level. Recommended for specialized content.

Common Accessibility Issues

Here are widespread problems found on modern websites:

1. Missing Alt Text

Images without descriptive alt text are inaccessible to screen reader users. Alt text should describe the image meaningfully, not just say “image” or “picture.”

2. Poor Color Contrast

Many users rely on keyboards instead of mice. Ensure all interactive elements are reachable and usable via keyboard, and provide visible focus indicators.

4. Missing Form Labels

Form inputs without associated labels confuse screen reader users. Always use proper <label> elements or ARIA labels.

5. Autoplay Content

Videos and audio that auto-play are disruptive and can disorient users. They should require user interaction to start.

6. Poor Heading Structure

Headings should form a logical hierarchy (h1, h2, h3, etc.). Skipping levels confuses screen reader users navigating document structure.

Best Practices

1. Semantic HTML

Use proper HTML elements for their intended purpose. This helps screen readers and browsers understand your content:

2. Keyboard Navigation

  3. All functionality is keyboard accessible

  5. Heading hierarchy is logical (no skipped levels)
